Summarize a PDF

Turn long PDFs into a concise summary of the key points with AI.

Summarize a PDF online

PDF Vision reads the full text of your PDF and returns a summary written by Claude, in the shape you choose: concise, detailed, or bullet points. Alongside it you get the document's outline — every heading with its page number — plus page, word and heading counts, so you can see where the important sections sit before reading them. Copy the summary or download it as a .txt file. Files up to 200 MB are accepted on Premium and 300 MB on Gold, and reports, contracts, papers and manuals all work as long as the text is selectable; your file is uploaded to the PDF Vision server and its text is sent to Anthropic for the summary.

How to summarize a PDF

  1. Upload your PDF

Sign in with a Premium or Gold plan and drop a text-based PDF into the summarizer; scanned files are flagged with an "Open PDF OCR" button so you can make them searchable first.

  2. Pick a summary style

Choose concise, detailed or bullet points depending on whether you need a quick verdict, a full briefing or a scannable list.

  3. Generate and save

Click generate, wait one to two minutes for long documents, then copy the summary or download it as a .txt file.

Why use it

Three summary shapes

Concise gives you the verdict, detailed keeps the reasoning and supporting figures, bullet points produces a list you can paste straight into notes or a meeting agenda.

Outline with page numbers

Every heading found in the document is listed with the page it starts on, turning a 90-page report into a map you can jump around in.

Numbers before you read

Page count, word count, heading count and average words per page are shown with the summary, so you know how dense the document is and how long a full read would take.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PDF summarizer free?
No — summarizing needs a Premium or Gold plan. Each summary is sent to an AI provider and billed per document, so it sits with the other generative features rather than the free tools. Premium includes 20 AI documents a day, Gold 200. Compressing, merging, splitting, rotating, watermarking, redacting and editing stay free, with no account needed for the first document of the day.
How long does summarizing a PDF take?
Seconds for a short file, one to two minutes for a long report. The text is extracted and structured first, then Claude reads the whole document before writing a single summary.
Can it summarize a scanned PDF?
Not directly — this tool runs no OCR. When a file has almost no selectable text it stops and shows an "Open PDF OCR" button. Make the scan searchable there, then return and summarize the recognised version.
Which AI writes the summary?
Claude, by Anthropic. It receives the extracted text with the heading structure detected in your PDF, and writes the summary from that text alone, in the style and length you asked for.
How long can the PDF be?
Long documents are handled: this tool follows the ceiling of your plan — 200 MB on Premium, 300 MB on Gold (the 15 MB cap you may see elsewhere applies to visitors with no account). The summary targets roughly a thousand words whatever the source length, so a 200-page manual is condensed harder than a ten-page note.
Should I summarize my PDF or chat with it?
Summarize when you want one pass over the entire document and a reusable text file. Chat with PDF is better for targeted questions, follow-ups and answers with page citations you can verify. Both need a Premium or Gold plan.
