Convert PDF to PDF/A online, free

PDF/A (ISO 19005) is the version of PDF built to be read in twenty years exactly as it looks today. Courts, tax authorities, public tenders and archive services often accept nothing else. PDF Vision converts your PDF to PDF/A-2b: every font is embedded in the file, colours are described by an sRGB colour profile, the document carries the PDF/A identification in its XMP metadata, and what PDF/A forbids — encryption, JavaScript — is left out. The "b" level guarantees the visual appearance: the pages look the same on any device, today and later. We check our converter against veraPDF, the reference validator of the PDF Association. Two things to know before converting: a password-protected PDF must be unlocked first, since PDF/A does not allow encryption; and converting rewrites the file, so a digital signature already in the document will no longer be valid — sign after converting. Conversion runs on PDF Vision's servers, files up to 15 MB, first file of the day free without an account.

Frequently asked questions

Which PDF/A version do I get?
PDF/A-2b (ISO 19005-2, level B), the version most portals accept. It guarantees that the document looks the same everywhere and in the future.
Will my document look the same?
Yes. Text, images and layout are kept; fonts are embedded so they cannot be replaced. Colours are expressed in sRGB, which can shift very saturated print colours slightly.
Can I convert a password-protected PDF?
No: PDF/A forbids encryption. Remove the password first with Unlock PDF, then convert.
What happens to a digital signature?
Converting rewrites the file, so an existing digital signature stops being valid. Convert to PDF/A first, then sign the PDF/A copy.
How do you know the result is valid PDF/A?
We test our converter with veraPDF, the open-source reference validator of the PDF Association. You can run veraPDF on your own copy too.
Is it free? Is my file uploaded?
One free conversion a day with no account. The conversion runs on PDF Vision's servers, so the file is uploaded to be processed; up to 15 MB.
