Convert PDF to Word online, free

PDF to Word rebuilds a PDF as an editable .docx: the text becomes real, selectable paragraphs you can rewrite, restyle and spell-check instead of a flat page. Headings, tables and images are recreated where the PDF's structure allows it. The conversion reads the text layer inside the file, so a scanned or photographed document needs OCR first. This tool is not browser-based: your PDF is uploaded to PDF Vision and passed to our external conversion provider for processing. The public limit is 15 MB, and your first conversion each day needs no account.

How to convert PDF to Word

  1. Upload your PDF

    Drop a PDF of up to 15 MB into the upload area. Try selecting text in it first — if you can't, it's a scan.

  2. Rebuild it as .docx

    PDF Vision sends the file to its conversion provider, which reads the document's text layer and rebuilds its paragraphs, tables and images as Word objects.

  3. Open and edit

    Download the .docx and open it in Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice or Pages, then tidy up any spacing the original layout forced.

Standard .docx output

The result is an ordinary Word file that Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice Writer and Pages all open, so you can turn on track changes and add comments on it as you would on any document.

Structure, not screenshots

Paragraphs, lists, tables and inline images come back as real Word objects, so styles and find-and-replace behave as in any Word file. Heading structure is reconstructed only where the PDF allows it, so the navigation pane may need a pass of restyling.

Is PDF to Word free?

My PDF is a scan — will it convert?
A scan carries no text layer, so you would get pictures of words rather than editable text. Run OCR PDF first (free with a free account) to add a text layer, then convert the resulting file to Word.
Will the .docx look exactly like the PDF?
Close, but not pixel-perfect. PDFs store positioned glyphs, not paragraphs, so the converter reconstructs the structure. Plain reports and contracts come out nearly identical; multi-column magazine layouts and dense footnotes need manual cleanup.
Can I convert a protected PDF?
Not while restrictions are in place. Use Unlock PDF first (free with a free account), on a document you are entitled to open, then convert the unrestricted copy. PDF Vision will not help you get around protection on someone else's file.
Does my PDF stay in my browser?
No. PDF to Word runs server-side: your file is uploaded to PDF Vision and processed by our external conversion provider, so it leaves both your device and our own infrastructure. Page-level tasks — merging, splitting, rotating, watermarking — do run fully in the browser and never upload anything.
Can I convert just a few pages of a long PDF?
Yes. Use Split PDF in your browser to pull out the pages you want, then convert that extract. It is also the practical way to bring a document over the 15 MB public limit into range.
